GASTROSCOPY
(EGD: Esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy)

Endoscopic examination of esophagus (food pipe), stomach and duodenum
(upper small intestine) for diagnosis or treatment.

Diagnostic

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Gastritis
  • Peptic (gastric, duodenal) ulcer
  • Upper GI (gastrointestinal) bleeding
  • Cancer of esophagus, stomach and duodenum
  • Esophageal narrowing (stricture, ring, web, achalasia)

Therapeutic

  • Dilatation of esophageal stricture
  • Achalasia balloon dilatation
  • Placement of esophageal stent or prosthesis
  • Band ligation of esophageal varices
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Glue injection of fundal varices
  • Foreign body removal
  • Threapy of bleeding lesions

FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY

Examination of rectum and lower large intestine usually for diagnosis of:

  • Hemorrhoids (piles)
  • Polyps
  • Colitis
  • Cancer

COLONOSCOPY

Examination of entire colon (large intenstine) for diagnosis or treatment.

  • Polypectomy (removal of polyp)
  • Treatment of bleeding lesions

ERCP
(Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography)

Examination of bile and pancreatic ducts under X rays for diagnosis or treatment.

Diagnostic

  • Stones in bile ducts and pancreatic duct
  • Stricture (narrowing) of bile ducts and pancreatic duct
  • Cancer of bile ducts and pancreas

Therapeutic

  • Removal of bile duct stones
  • Placement of biliary and pancreatic stents

PEG
(Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy)

Endoscopic placement of feeding tube through abdominal wall without surgery for patients who cannot swallow (e.g., stroke patient)
